Circus Hotel

The Circus Hotel is implanted in the north of Alexanderplatz on the Rosenthaler Platz for about 20 years. This square is one of Berlin’s busiest intersection continuously crossed by a steady stream of cars, trams and bicycles. The project that we developed is directly inspired by the Circus hotel logo: portions of arcs are crossing and intersecting each other to draw a traditional hotel marquee. The fine steel structure is suspended to the hotel facade. It is entirely made of mirror polished stainless steel. It reflects and distorts the city life, creating an immersive staging of Berlin. In order not to damage the facade of the hotel, the marquise is fixed punctually to the facade on eight supporting points. Over the seasons the perception of the project evolves. In summer and in spring, the marquee creates a shadow that protects people from the sun. In fall and winter, the project becomes a sculpture, sheltering people from rain and snow.
